Aleksandr Plushenko, the son of the legendary Russian figure skater, two-time Olympic, three-time World, and seven-time European champion Evgeni Plushenko, will compete for the Azerbaijani national team.
According to Offsideplus.az, "RIA Novosti Sport" reported that the figure skater will represent Azerbaijan under its national flag on the international stage.
The source notes that the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) approved the younger Plushenko's request to represent another country during its meeting today.
At 13 years old, Aleksandr Plushenko will be eligible to represent Azerbaijan in international competitions starting next season. To finalize the transition, the International Skating Union (ISU) must issue a special clearance document granting him this right.
His father, Evgeni Plushenko, claimed four Olympic medals (two gold, two silver) and won the Russian national championship ten times over the course of his illustrious career.
