Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tofig Bahramov, the legendary referee of Azerbaijani football.
Offsideplus.az reports that Tofig Bahramov was born in 1925 in Aghdam. Bahramov, who started his career as a football player in the 1940s, first played in the youth team of "Spartak", then moved to the "Neftyanik" club. However, unfortunately, due to an injury, the player had to end his career early. Despite this, Tofig Bahramov, who loves football, did not give up on this field and chose the path of refereeing.
Tofig Bahramov is one of the first referees in the Soviet Union in the finals of European Cups. However, his work as a referee in the final of the 1966 World Cup in England is what made him famous worldwide. In this game, Bahramov created a legendary moment in the history of football by registering the goal of England's Jeff Hertz through the goal line. In addition, in 1972, he refereed the final of the Intercontinental Cup.
Tofig Bahramov, who played an important role in the establishment of the Association of Azerbaijan Football Federations, worked here as the chairman of judges and general secretary. Also, his name is given to the Republic Stadium in Baku today.
