The match between Zirə and Torpedo (Kutaisi, Georgia) during the first qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League marked two significant milestones in the history of Azerbaijani football.
According to Offsideplus.az, referencing the official website of the Professional Football League, the game held in Sumgait has gone down in history as the 500th match played by Azerbaijani representatives in European club tournaments.
Our teams have participated in a total of 120 matches in the Champions League, 283 in the Europa League (formerly the UEFA Cup), 63 in the Conference League, 8 in the Cup Winners' Cup, and 26 in the Intertoto Cup. Two of these matches were annulled, and one did not take place, resulting in a technical outcome. Taking these technical results into account, our clubs have achieved 159 victories, drawn 112 times, and lost 229 matches.
The debut in continental competitions took place in the 1994/95 season. On August 9, 1994, Turan lost 0-5 to Fenerbahçe in Turkey.
Zirə's player Ruan Renato's goal against Torpedo was the 550th goal scored by Azerbaijani clubs in European competitions. Excluding technical results, the goal difference stands at 552-759.
The first goal by an Azerbaijani team was recorded in the 1995/96 season. Yadigar Suleymanov scored for Kəpəz in the UEFA Cup match against Austria (Vienna, Austria) on August 22, 1995, which ended 5-1.
It is worth noting that Zirə won the match against Torpedo with a score of 3-0.
