The arrival of Esteghlal footballer Duckens Nazon in Azerbaijan, while trying to flee Iran during recent tensions and bombardments, was marked by true drama.
Offsideplus.az reports that the athlete spoke about his escape from Tehran and the terrifying moments he experienced at the border:
"When the bombardments began, everyone headed toward Turkey, but I decided to come to Azerbaijan alone with my driver. After a 10-hour journey and numerous checkpoints, we reached the border at 4 AM. Since I have a French passport, the Iranian side stamped my exit, but I didn't have the required visa code to enter the Azerbaijani side."
"I was stuck between two countries"
The player stated that he had to wait at the border for 32 hours due to the visa issue: "Since the Iranians had already stamped my exit, I had no right to go back. For several hours, I was in 'no man's land'—the territory between the two countries. Diplomats were passing by, but I was all alone. They told me, 'This might be resolved tomorrow or by the end of the week.'"
Intervention of Ambassadors and the "War Zone"
Seeing the situation become critical, the footballer's relatives began to exert pressure on various embassies: "The French Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Sophie Aubert, contacted the French Embassy in Iran to secure my passage. Finally, when I crossed the border, it looked like a war zone—people in uniforms, everything was gray and looked terrifying."
