The Azerbaijan national team lost 1–3 to Iceland in their final match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
As reported by Offsideplus.az, national team head coach Ayxan Abbasov commented on the match during the post-game press conference:
“First of all, I want to thank the fans. The atmosphere was incredible. Despite the score, they supported our players until the very end.
As for the game, the players wanted to play confidently at home. Today we were more comfortable. Scoring against France is much more difficult. The opponent created problems for us in set-piece situations. Shahruddin was injured. I want to thank the players for their recent performances. They showed determination. If we want results, time is important — we must be patient. To be honest, we had many absences. Now we have gained new players as well. Overall, this cycle is over, and we will look ahead.”
Abbasov also addressed whether he will remain in charge of the national team for the Nations League qualifiers:
“Inshallah. As I said, we must be patient. Before the match against Ukraine, we had very little time. It was difficult to convince the players and prepare to compete with such teams. If we want to achieve something, we need time. In the coming days, the answers to your questions will become clear.”
The match was held at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium.
