Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers have secured their first medals at the European Championships held in Tirana, Albania.
Offsideplus.az reports that two members of the national team climbed the podium on the second day of the competition. Rashad Mammadov left no chance for his Turkish opponent Omer Recep, winning with a decisive 8:0 score to claim the bronze medal.
Islam Abbasov, competing in the 87 kg weight category, also capped off a successful performance with a medal. He defeated another Turkish representative, Dogan Kaya, with a 5:1 score in the decisive bout to finish third. With this achievement, Islam has brought his personal tally of European Championship medals to five (1 silver, 4 bronze).
In the heavyweight division (130 kg), Beka Kandelaki came within a step of the bronze medal. However, after a defeat to his Ukrainian opponent, our athlete finished the tournament in 5th place.
