Experienced Grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov has shared an optimistic outlook on the upcoming UEFA Champions League playoff clash between Qarabag and Newcastle United.

According to Offsideplus.az, Mamedyarov spoke about the fixture in an interview with the Azerbaijan Chess Federation's press service. He noted that despite the English side’s status as clear favorites and their vast experience, he does not underestimate Qarabag’s chances. Highlighting Newcastle's inconsistent form this year, Mamedyarov recalled Qarabag’s resilient performances against giants like Benfica, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Chelsea, stating that he expects an unpredictable result from the Azerbaijani champions.

The Grandmaster added that, if his tournament schedule allows, he plans to support the team at the stadium for this difficult test. Recalling last month’s spectacular victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, which he watched live with his father, Mamedyarov mentioned that they stayed until the final whistle despite the freezing weather, describing those moments as unforgettable.

The first leg between Qarabag and Newcastle will take place in Baku on February 18 at 21:45, with the return leg scheduled for the night of February 24-25 at 00:00 in England.
