“The match was always going to be tough. Montenegro had just one game in this international window, and it was at home against us. Meanwhile, we had to play two away games in a short period, which naturally led to fatigue,” said Siyasat Asgarov, head coach of the Azerbaijani women's national football team.
As reported by Offsideplus.az, speaking to AFFA’s official website following the 1–1 draw against Montenegro in the UEFA Women's Nations League C League Group 4, Asgarov expressed his disappointment with the result.
“We did everything we could to recover the team in time for the match. Montenegro is also our main rival for first place in the group. To be honest, we made some mistakes in the first half—especially in attack, where we struggled to retain possession. Thanks to our goalkeeper and solid defensive performance, we went into the break with a draw. In the second half, we played better offensively, gained the upper hand, and scored. We even had other chances. Unfortunately, failing to score a second goal allowed Montenegro to push forward in the dying minutes. As a result, we conceded a goal from the penalty spot in the 90+2nd minute. In that penalty situation, the ball touched both a Montenegro player’s and one of our player’s hands,” he explained.
Asgarov also spoke about their upcoming home match against Lithuania on May 30:
“We’re disappointed we couldn’t secure the win against Montenegro. Still, we’re very much in the race for first place. Our final match against Lithuania at home is extremely important. We need to win and also improve our goal difference. So we’ll aim for a convincing victory over Lithuania.”
It should be noted that had Azerbaijan won yesterday’s match, they would have secured promotion to League B in advance. Currently, both Montenegro and Azerbaijan have five points, but Montenegro tops the group due to a better goal difference (4:2 compared to Azerbaijan’s 3:1).
