"Qarabag" club has become an official partner of the United Nations (UN) "Sport for Climate Action" initiative.
Offsideplus.az reports that by joining this initiative implemented by the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Aghdam representative has also become part of the UN's "Race to Zero" campaign. "Qarabag" supported the transition to zero carbon emissions in the sports sector in accordance with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Club President Tahir Gözel said:
“Joining this prestigious initiative is not only international recognition for us, but also a great responsibility. Sports societies are a powerful tool of influence, and we are ready to use this power to protect the environment. We are both happy and proud to be a part of this initiative. Our club has been carrying the name of Karabakh in Europe for many years with great responsibility. The continuous results achieved by our main team and the work done by our club are at the attention of international organizations. All this has led to “Karabakh” gaining trust and recognition in the world. We will do our best to represent both our country and the name of Karabakh worthily at the UN initiative.”
It should be noted that at the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) held in Baku, a joint alliance of football clubs was established at the initiative of “Karabakh” Football Club. The world's, especially Europe's, well-known and experienced football clubs in the field of climate change and sustainability - "Liverpool", "Tottenham" (both England), "Atlético Madrid", "Real Betis" (both Spain), "Fenerbahçe", "Galatasaray" (both Turkey), "Udinese" (Italy), "Porto" (Portugal), "Flamengo" (Brazil) and "Malmö" (Sweden) have accepted the invitation of "Qarabag" and signed a declaration to join the alliance. "Qarabag" Football Club deeply thanks the UNFCCC team for highly appreciating this step, responding positively to our club's commitments and efforts, and accepting it as a member.
It should be noted that "Qarabag" has committed to contributing to global climate action through sport by joining this platform. The commitments include reducing carbon emissions by at least 50 percent by 2030, reducing them to zero by 2040, publicly disclosing annual climate reports, submitting a concrete action plan within 12 months, and openly sharing climate issues with partners.
