The European Karate Championships kicked off today in Frankfurt, Germany.

According to Offsideplus.az, seven representatives of Azerbaijan entered the competition on the opening day of the tournament.

The competing athletes include Roman Heydarov (kata), Gulay Orujova (61 kg), three-time World and European Champion Irina Zaretska (68 kg), Aysel Gasimova (+68 kg), Rashid Suleymanov (75 kg), Turgut Hasanov (84 kg), and Asiman Gurbanli (+84 kg).

Zaretska and Orujova will both fight for bronze medals, while Suleymanov still has a chance through the repechage rounds. The decisive matches are scheduled to take place on May 23.

The European Championships will run until May 24.
