Azerbaijan’s U-16 national football team gathered for a training camp on May 5 as part of preparations for two friendly matches against Belarus, scheduled for May 9 and 11.
According to Offsideplus.az, the absence of players from the Sabah Football Academy in the 22-man squad selected by head coach Aqil Nabiyev has sparked debate. Given Sabah’s reputation as one of the most developed football academies in the country, the lack of call-ups has raised questions and speculations.
Both AFFA and Sabah have clarified the situation.
AFFA spokesperson Elnur Mammadli explained to Offsideplus.az that no invitations were sent to Sabah players for this particular camp:
“This is a selection-oriented gathering, and head coach Aqil Nabiyev chose to invite players who have rarely or never been called up before. Sabah’s players have already been included in the U-17 national team, and the coach is well aware of their potential. That’s why they were not included this time.”
Sabah’s communications manager, Elnur Hamidov, also commented on the issue, firmly denying any refusal to release players:
“No official request was received by the club regarding player call-ups for the U-16 team. Sabah Football Academy has consistently provided players to national teams across all age categories. This cooperation has always been based on mutual understanding and commitment. Developing youth football and nurturing young talent remains one of our core strategic goals. We are proud to contribute to the national teams and always treat domestic competitions with utmost respect. Enhancing the quality and competitiveness of local tournaments is essential for the development of football in Azerbaijan, and Sabah remains dedicated to this vision.”
