The World Youth Chess Championship for under-14, under-16, and under-18 categories, held in Montesilvano, Italy, has concluded with a historic triumph for the Azerbaijani national team.
Offsideplus.az reports that on June 26 - Armed Forces Day - Azerbaijani chess players secured two gold medals, bringing a double celebration to the country.
The winners were determined in the 11th and final round of the championship.
In the Girls U14 category, Zahra Allahverdi, who maintained her lead throughout the tournament, sealed her championship title in the final round. Following a draw against Turkey's Tuana Abak, she reached 9 points to claim the World Championship gold medal.
The next gold medal for the Azerbaijani chess school was added to the team's tally by Khagan Ahmad, competing in the Open U16 category. The young talent, who previously claimed the European U14 champion title, delivered a confident performance in Italy as well. By defeating FIDE representative Gleb Sheglov in the final round, Khagan accumulated 9.5 points out of 11 rounds to capture the first World Champion title of his career.
Statistics: In this prestigious tournament, where more than 750 chess players from 83 countries tested their skills, Azerbaijani representatives stood on the highest step of the podium twice.
