The Azerbaijani national Greco-Roman wrestling team is continuing its training camp in Goygol.

Offsideplus.az reports that the preparation process, which began on January 14, is primarily focused on enhancing the athletes' physical conditioning.

The national team’s head coach, Mohammad Bana, shared his insights on the progress of the training and the upcoming objectives. He noted that the current phase serves both as an introductory period with the squad and as a build-up for the European Championships scheduled for April.

Intensive Schedule: Approximately Six Camps Planned

The coach emphasized that a rigorous competition calendar awaits the team this year. Before the European Championships kick off on April 20, the squad will undergo several key tests:

  • The Ranking Series tournament in Albania;

  • The U-23 European Championships;

  • The Senior European Championships.

According to Bana, a total of 5-6 training camps are planned to ensure the athletes reach their optimal form by the World Championships.

"The Triple Chain is Vital for Success"

Highlighting that Azerbaijan is one of the top three countries in the world for Greco-Roman wrestling, the head coach praised the technical skills of the athletes:

"Azerbaijani athletes have always possessed high technical mastery. However, this alone is not enough. We must forge physical preparation, technical skill, and psychological resilience into a strong, unbreakable chain. The federation leadership, coaching staff, and wrestlers must operate as a single, unified team."

Primary Goal: Reaching Peak Form for the World Championships

Mohammad Bana revealed that they have divided the annual strategy into two main stages. While the European Championships in April serve as a significant milestone, the ultimate goal is to achieve maximum results at the World Championships. In the coming days, more than 20 wrestlers who distinguished themselves in the national championships will have the opportunity to prove themselves at the tournament in Albania.
