Derin Berkoz, a basketball player for the Azerbaijan national team, spoke to Offsideplus.az.

- How do you evaluate your performance at the FIBA European Championship?

- As a team, we achieved a result in the B division for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani basketball. I am very happy to be a part of that. However, I believe we could have reached even higher levels. Unfortunately, we suffered some disappointing defeats in certain matches. If we had won those games, we could have finished the championship in a stronger position.

- This championship was also personally successful for you. You finished the tournament with an average of 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and an efficiency rating of 11.

- In fact, I focus more on how much I can contribute to my team rather than individual statistics. I tried to do my best not only in attack but also in rebounding and defence. However, I want to work harder to improve the aspects of my game that were lacking for the next tournament.

- Which game would you particularly highlight from this tournament?

- I performed well in the game against Switzerland, which was significant for my team's victory. That match holds special importance for me.

- What is the atmosphere like in the Azerbaijan national team right now?

- My coaches and the federation have a lot of faith in me, providing all kinds of support for my development. I see this place as my family, and I am very pleased with the warm atmosphere in the team.

- What are your goals for the upcoming season with both your club and the national team?

- I am ready to fulfil every task assigned to me at both club and national team levels. As a young player, my main goal is to keep improving. I also want to thank my coaches for their support along the way.

- You have also played in the Azerbaijan Basketball League. How do you evaluate the level of the Azerbaijani championship?

- To be honest, the level of the Azerbaijan Basketball League has significantly improved in recent seasons. Especially in my position, there are many strong foreign players. That’s why I chose to stay here and play in such a competitive environment. In fact, I had offers from the NCAA this year. Nevertheless, I thought that staying here to develop was the right choice for me. Additionally, I want to play in Azerbaijan until I turn 20 to gain "homegrown" status.
