Azerbaijani clubs have faced Czech representatives in European competitions 12 times to date, without securing a victory. Now, Sabah will attempt to end this unfortunate streak.
According to Offsideplus.az, Sabah will face Czech club Slavia in the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage. Should the Baku side win this match, it will mark the first victory for Azerbaijani clubs against teams from the Czech Republic.
The competition between clubs from the two countries began in 1997. During this period, Qarabag, Shamkir, and Karvan have all faced Czech teams. Shamkir lost both matches against Slavia, while Karvan managed a goalless draw in their away fixture against the Prague side.
The team that has faced Czech clubs the most among Azerbaijani sides is Qarabag. The Agdam club has played against Yablonets, Viktoria Plzen, and Slovan Liberec, but has yet to secure a win in any of these encounters, with only three draws to their name.
To date, Azerbaijani representatives have also failed to progress past Czech clubs in these matchups. Slavia has previously eliminated both Shamkir and Karvan from competition.
Changing this unfortunate tradition is one of Sabah's main objectives. The Baku club aims not only to secure their first victory against Slavia but also to turn a new page for Azerbaijani football.
